Why a reporter resigned from Globo to go work at RedeTV

-

“Everyone sees what you appear to be, but few know what you really are,” wrote philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli almost 500 years ago. Willian Kury seemed happy in the Globo and GloboNews report.

Suddenly, the surprise: the resignation after almost 5 years in the group. Why does a journalist decide to leave the largest communications company in the country? Certainly to take a leap in your career.

Days later, he surprised again: he agreed to go to RedeTV, a broadcaster with low ratings, journalism with little repercussion and an image linked to popular programs.

Many people – including professional colleagues – must have asked themselves: what do you mean, exchanging the coveted global badge for a job in an undervalued channel?

Only Willian Kury himself can answer. The reporter gave a clue in the post in which he announced his dismissal. “… I had to put an end to it. For me. Out of respect for me.”

The public and budding journalists cultivate the illusion that working on TV is a dream job. There is even greater romanticization about being a Globo employee. Yes, you gain status, but you pay a high price.

Reporters spend the day on the street to record or make live appearances. There are hours of dedication and waiting for a few minutes in the air. Often, the agenda is canceled at the last minute or technical problems make it impossible to go live.

Most of them, over the years, become upset with stagnation. There is no career plan. Few get the opportunity to become a news presenter or have a permanent role in the studio.

For this reason, several reporters have already exchanged video for executive roles behind the cameras, with higher salaries, as happened with Renato Ribeiro, from Esporte da Globo, who became the channel’s content director, and Rafael Ihara, from SP reporting, now coordinator in a corporate communications company.

Others give up journalism to become entrepreneurs. This was the case of Gabriel Senna. He resigned after 17 years at the station to dedicate himself to a cake company opened with friends. After falling ill due to emotional exhaustion, Nádia Bochi left the ‘Mais Você’ team to teach courses and create content on the internet.

Leaving Globo to work on another channel is not exactly uncommon among presenters. Ana Paula Padrão resigned to work at SBT. Carlos Nascimento went to the Band. Márcio Gomes transferred to CNN Brasil.

It happens less with reporters. And, before Willian Kury, there was never a switch from Globo to RedeTV. The originality reinforces a mentality: feeling valued in a smaller company is more worth it than being dissatisfied in a large company.

In his new job, the reporter will produce special articles and will be on the bench at ‘RedeTV News’ to cover vacations and days off for incumbent Augusto Xavier.

He will probably have more space and autonomy than in his years at Globo and GloboNews. Perhaps, as he indicated in his farewell, he will start to feel more respected. Maybe he’ll be happier.
