Goku Almost Created the Worst Villain in Dragon Ball History

In Chapter 257 of the Dragon Ball manga, Vegeta is methodically killing Frieza’s top soldiers on Planet Namek after traveling there to retrieve the Dragon Balls and using their wish-granting powers to gain immortality. Most of the villains Vegeta encounters laugh in his face at the prospect of a lone Saiyan being strong enough to kill them, but one by one, Vegeta proves them wrong and moves closer and closer to his final wish.

While on the surface it seems like a good thing that Vegeta is killing Frieza’s soldiers and thus preventing perhaps the greatest evil in the universe from exploiting the Dragon Balls’ magic, it actually isn’t. Vegeta wanted to use the Dragon Balls to achieve the same goal as Frieza, immortality, and he wanted to use his eternal life to simply take Frieza’s place. Vegeta didn’t want to be an eternal hero of the cosmos, he wanted to be Frieza – something he proves he can do in this chapter, and it’s all Goku’s fault.

When Vegeta attacked Earth after Raditz came to the planet to recruit Goku for another mission, he was defeated by the combined might of Goku, Krillin, Gohan, and Yajirobe – who surprisingly delivered the most debilitating attack by severing Vegeta’s Great Ape’s tail with his sword.

When Vegeta was close to death and crawling back to his space capsule, Krillin took Yajirobe’s sword and went to Vegeta with the intention of killing him. Goku, however, told Krillin to stop and let Vegeta go, thus allowing Vegeta to travel to Namek and come very close to becoming Dragon Ball’s scariest and most powerful villain.

The reason Vegeta would become the worst villain in the series and not just another villain for Goku to take down is due to the power he was able to unlock in the most recent chapters of Dragon Ball Super. Vegeta has been training with Lord Bills in the Higher Ego, which is divine energy used by a God of Destruction.

While Vegeta’s Saiyan strength would be limited, as he could no longer come close to death to get power-ups, he could still train his body hard enough over the course of his eternal life to literally become a God of Destruction. An immortal Vegeta’s Higher Ego who never developed beyond his villainous nature would be downright terrifying – and his reign would have been all because Goku decided to show mercy.
