A Samsung lost its crown as leader of the Chinese foldable smartphone market after many quarters carrying that title. According to data from IDC, the drop was rapid and took the Korean company from a leadership position of almost 30% to just 5.9% share in the first quarter of this year.

For analysts consulted by the research company, Samsung led for a long time because it was the pioneer in the flexible screen cell phone segment, but the scenario changed when competition began to appear.

As a result, Huawei now leads the Chinese foldable market with its share reaching 44.1%. Honor is second, with a 26.7% share at the beginning of this year.

Completing the podium are vivo, with a share of 12.6%, and OPPO, with 9%. In other words, this shows that Samsung fell from leadership to the bottom of the list in a few months.

  1. Huawei – 44.1%
  2. Honor – 26.7%
  3. alive – 12.6%
  4. OPPO – 9%
  5. Samsung – 5.9%

Another point that may be weighing against Samsung are geopolitical factors, since the Chinese do not tend to view the brand favorably and this has caused the Korean brand to lose its market share when we talk about traditional smartphones.

Furthermore, there is a tendency towards “patriotic” consumption in China, while the trade war led by the United States drives Chinese away from Western brands or those that have links with the USA.

Therefore, the trend is that Samsung will not be able to regain relevance in the foldable segment within China.
