The European Space Agency (ESA) released images captured by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter probe last week, with shapes that resemble spiders on the surface of Mars. The formations were found in the so-called “Inca City”, which is located at the south pole of the planet.
According to the ESA, these are “small cracks that form when spring sunlight falls on the carbon dioxide coating deposited during the dark winter months.”
These formations, seen from above, create the sensation that we are seeing many spiders together.
This is not the first time that “mysterious” images have appeared in space exploration and gained repercussions. Still on Mars, NASA captured an image, using the Curiosity rover, that shows a kind of pyramid formed by rocks on the red planet. At another time, a shape that looked like a finger was seen on Mars.
In early March, NASA released images of something that looks like a “surfboard” passing in orbit around the Moon.
Below, we show other shapes and images captured in space that sparked curiosity.
