O responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) will always be a very heated debate, and Huawei is the latest company to enter the discussion, for all the wrong reasons: according to several users on Weibo, the AI tool from the Pura 70 line can remove your clothes from photos during editing of images.
The problem has already been recognized by Huawei through its customer service, which attributed the failure to “a loophole within the AI algorithm”. However, as of this note, the error still persists.
The issue was exposed while using the AI auto-tuning tool. While no instance resulted in a “full nude” of a person in any photo, a simple tap on the screen easily increased cleavage and removed parts of clothing, among other examples.
The use of generative artificial intelligence in portable devices is becoming increasingly evident: not only Google’s Gemini AI has already gained a dedicated app on the Play Storefor example, but functions such as “Circle to Search” on smartphones or hyper-detailed image creations from mere sketches (see the Galaxy Book4to cite a recent example) make the experience of using technology very accessible to all audiences.
However, while the most recent examples have proven to be quite safe, there are cases where the application of AI has led to more nefarious results – whether intended or not: TudoCelular has already spoken in the past about deepfakes It is deepfacesand more recently two young men in Florida were arrested for creating “fake nudes” of girls aged 12, 13, 14.
In the case of Huawei, the situation is obviously unintentional, but still, the risk persists, given the ease of use of the editing tool. The Pura 70 line, consisting of four devices (Pura 70, 70 Pro, 70 Pro Plus and 70 Ultra) was launched on the Chinese market last week – with a strong focus on marketing AI tools.
It remains to be seen when and how quickly the Chinese manufacturer will distribute an update.
