The end of the game between PSG and Borussia Dortmund, in the Champions League semi-final, had a somewhat curious scene on the Parque dos Príncipes lawn: after ending the match with a 1-0 victory for the Germans, the Italian referee Daniele Orsato48 years old, was seen crying on the lawn.
The reason is quite simple and had nothing to do with the elimination of the home team: the judge plans to retire after the Eurocup this year and was on the field for the last time in Champions League games.

Orsato refereed 55 Champions League games in his career, including the final of the 19/20 season, played between PSG and Bayern Munich, which ended in a 1-0 victory and the Bavarians’ title. He was on the field in semifinal games in three of the last four editions, and in 23/24, he made seven appearances in the continental competition.
The Italian started refereeing in 2002 and plans to finish a career that lasted more than two decades. In addition to his extensive CV in Champions League games, the judge reached the pinnacle of his career in 2022, when he refereed one of the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar, played between Argentina and Croatia. In 2024, he is on the list of referees for the European Championship, held in Germany in June.
After the competition, the referee’s plans indicate retirement. So far, there have been 602 refereed games, the vast majority of them in Italian football, with an average of 4.7 yellow cards and a total of 153 expulsions.
