Borussia Dortmund beats PSG in France and returns to the Champions League final after 11 years

Borussia Dortmund are in the final of Champions League. This Tuesday, the German team beat PSG 1-0, at Parque dos Príncipes, in the second leg of the semi-final. Defender Mats Hummels scored the winning goal for the visitors – who won the first leg by the same score.

With this, Borussia Dortmund will once again compete in the final of Europe’s most important tournament after 11 years. In 2013, the team lost to rivals Bayern Munich 2-1 at Wembley – the venue for this season’s final. The German team won the competition in 1997, when they defeated Juventus.

PSG, in turn, saw its unprecedented Champions League title postponed once again. The French team was looking to return to the final after four years, when they lost to Bayern 1-0.

Borussia Dortmund awaits the result between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to find out their opponent in the decision – which takes place on June 1st. The German team returns to the field on Saturday, against Mainz, for the German Championship. PSG faces Toulouse, on Sunday, in the French Championship.

The first half was tepid, with few clear chances for both sides. Borussia Dortmund made it clear that they would seek to defend themselves in the match, while PSG threw themselves in search of the first goal – which didn’t come.

PSG started better at the beginning of the second half, hitting the ball against the post in the first minute. However, it was Borussia Dortmund who opened the scoring. After five minutes, Hummels took advantage of Brandt’s cross from a corner, went free into the penalty area and headed in to score the Germans’ first goal.

Needing two goals, PSG had no choice but to attack. The French team threatened Kobel’s goal in the 15th minute, when Nuno Mendes hit the post.

Borussia Dortmund got rid of the ball and started to defend to maintain the positive result. Hummels extended the score in the 31st minute, but the goal was well disallowed by the linesman.

Mbappé and company even tried to tie the game for PSG. The French star hit the crossbar in the 41st minute and, three minutes later, Vitinha hit the post again – the French team’s fourth ball hit the post in the game.

The defensive wall erected by Borussia Dortmund remained firm until the final whistle, even with the pressure imposed by PSG.
