Referee Alisson Furtado, from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), gave a long outburst to the podcast ‘Vai de Boa’, last week, about the situation experienced by refereeing in Brazilian football. Since 2014 at CBF for Tocantins, Alisson Furtado stated that the category doesn’t make mistakes because it wants to. Then he said that the referees’ children no longer want to watch football.

At 37 years old, Furtado has already refereed several games in Series A, B, C and D, as well as the finals of the Copa Verde and the Campeonato Tocantinense.

– We don’t make mistakes because we want to. We are human beings, we have nephews, we have sons, we have fathers, we have mothers. And now in the pre-season there was a lot of this debate. Several colleagues saying that their children no longer want to watch football. Referees’ children don’t want to watch football. Why? Because narrator and commentators in some situations criticize, and they don’t criticize the referee, they criticize the person.

– Behind that person there is a CPF, there is a person who has feelings, who has a profession, who has people who are watching and rooting for him. I have my family who, when they watch the game, don’t support team A, they support me. So, we need to change this culture of the referee being the villain of the story. We have an important role in football, but it’s not just the referee who will make football better or not, it’s the entire world of football, the press and players have to come together to make football better.

Alisson Furtado’s interview took place last Thursday, and as soon as the ball rolled over the weekend, during the 5th round of the Brasileirão, new controversies involving arbitration emerged. In the Botafogo and Bahia clash, striker Júnior Santos made an ironic comment in a post by journalist Igor Rodrigues, after having a goal disallowed. In the game between Vitória and São Paulo, defender Wagner Leonardo, from Vitória, was sent off after hitting Calleri in the face with his arm. After the expulsion he invaded the field.

Bruno Spindel vents against the refereeing: “They will always make mistakes against Flamengo”

-What we at ABRAFUT are seeing is an increasingly unfair scenario against arbitration. Our referees are being used as a cloud of smoke to cover the teams’ responsibility for their players’ mistakes – says an excerpt from the position.
