Former Paraguayan national team goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert caused controversy on the social network The former Argentine player and coach died on Sunday (5/5), aged 85, after failing to survive complications from severe anemia.

“I think what should be done with Chilavert is to take him to schools so that children know what man was like 40 million years ago. First Chilavert, then the monkey”, said the late former coach in a report in 1998 before a clash between Independiente – led by Menotti – and Vélez Sarsfield, which included the Paraguayan goalkeeper.

Chilavert and Menotti exchanged barbs at the time in interviews and the friction between them seems to have not resolved over time. The former goalkeeper responded to the former coach’s speech in a provocative tone: “We, monkeys, are still alive and we don’t have children addicted to drugs. In the 1990s we caught everyone with Vélez.”

Chilavert controversies

This is not the first speech by Chilavert that has generated controversy on social media. In March this year, Vélez Sarsfield’s idol commented on the episodes of racism against Vinicius Jr and attacked the Brazilian.

“Why was what I said to Vinicius Júnior considered strong? Football is for men. When, in Paraguay, we tell someone not to be a faggot, it’s not derogatory at all. The Netflix cameras were there and he started crying. In fact, he is the first to attack his rivals,” the former goalkeeper told Argentine radio station Splendid AM 990.

The former goalkeeper fired at Brazilian players on the occasion: “Brazilians are the worst racists in the world. The violence against the Argentines (in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at Maracanã) was on their part. When the Brazilian police beat Argentines and Boca fans (in the 2023 Libertadores final against Fluminense), where was Vinicius, who is an example for Brazil’s leaders?”
