Lando Norris won his first Grand Prix in Formula 1. This Sunday, the 5th, in Miami, the English McLaren driver started in fifth, but had a more efficient strategy, had the safety car and won in Florida (USA). Dutchman Max Verstappen, from Red Bull, who started on pole and ran over a cone, was second, with Charles Lecrerc, from Ferrari, in third.
Norris, 24 years old, had already reached the podium on 15 occasions, but never in the highest place. This was also McLaren’s first victory of the season. Previously, Verstappen won four (Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Japan and China) and Carlos Sainz, from Ferrari, one (Australia).
“We had some mistakes, but we got the strategy right and I thank McLaren and also my parents,” said an emotional Norris after the victory. “I’m proud, I’ve made a lot of mistakes, but today we did everything right. It’s a memory forever”, he added.
Despite finishing second, Verstappen increased his lead this season. He reached 136 points and now has 35 over second-placed Sergio Perez, also from Red Bull, who finished fifth in the Florida GP. Leclerc has 98 and is followed by Sainz (85) and Norris (83).
+ Confirmed: Nico Hülkenberg will be Audi’s first Formula 1 driver
The race
Verstappen started on pole and immediately opened up an advantage over his rivals and did not allow Leclerc’s first attack. Norris, in turn, lost a position at the start.
On lap 23, the Dutchman from Red Bull lost the line and hit a traffic cone. The virtual safety car had to be activated until the object was removed and Verstappen, luckily, only needed to change the tires. The stop dropped the Dutchman to fourth place and Oscar Piastri (McLaren) became the new leader. The McLaren driver left first position when he entered the pits on lap 28. Norris then took advantage and took the lead, opening up a large advantage over Verstappen.
Six laps later, the safety car had to enter the track due to the crash caused by Kevin Magnussen (Haas) in Logan Sargeant (Williams). It was then that Norris decided to go and change tires and he did well. Upon resumption, the Englishman had a 1s2 advantage, but tried to increase it lap after lap until finishing more than 7 seconds ahead. The next GP will be on May 19th in Emilia-Romagna, in Imola.
