Brazil remains without medals in the Dushanbe Judo Grand Slam in Tajikistan. This Saturday (4), four Brazilian judokas competed in the women’s up to 63kg and 70kg categories. The best result came with Luana Carvalho, at -70kg, with the Brazilian finishing in seventh place after losing in the first round of the repechage.

Luana Carvalho started her Dushanbe Grand Slam campaign well, beating Mongolia’s Nyam Batsuuri by ippon in the first round. She then beat German Giovanna Scoccimarro by waza-ari to advance in the bracket. But in the quarterfinals, Luana lost by ippon to the British Katie Yeats-Brown, going to the repechage. In the next fight, the Brazilian was eliminated after receiving three shidos against Kelly Petersen, also from Great Britain, ending her campaign in Tajikistan.
The other Brazilian representatives lost in the first round of the Dushanbe Grand Slam. In the 70kg, Ellen Froner lost to Katarzyna Sobierajska, from Poland, after taking two blows for waza-ari. In the 63kg, Nauana Silva fell to Croatian Katarina Kristo, while Gabriella Matena lost to Mongolian Gankhaich Bold. Both lost by waza-ari.
Olympic race
Currently, the only judo category where Brazil would not have a place at the Paris Olympic Games is the women’s 70kg. With the result in Tajikistan, Luana Carvalho rises to 25th place in the Olympic ranking with 2060 points. At the moment, the last place would go to Hungarian Szabrina Gercsak, who is two positions ahead of Luana with 2237 points. Luana will still have a chance to score points in the Grand Slam in Kazakhstan next week and in the World Championship, which takes place between May 19th and 244th in Abu Dhabi. At -63kg, Brazil would currently be classified with Olympic medalist Ketleyn Quadros, who chose not to compete in Dushanbe.
