Former right-back Jonathan considered that former midfielder Carlos Alberto was a better player than Arrascaeta, currently at Flamengo. The former player revealed by Cruzeiro cited the characteristics of both to justify the choice.

“I played against Arrascaeta coming up for Cruzeiro and I caught him at Flamengo, too. Carlinhos, at his high level, played more than Arrascaeta. Without a shadow of a doubt”, began Jonathan, in an interview with the podcast MunDu Menesesfrom the ESPN Brazil.

“Carlinhos made his career a little dark due to his extra-field actions. With high performance in the best physical shape, he was much better than Arrascaeta. Carlinhos played 19 games, was champion of the Champions League and world champion with Porto”, highlighted Jonathan.

“Carlinhos is what? Remember Felipe? Carlinhos scribbles. Arrascaeta reads what? He doesn’t doodle. He has a very good pass, makes some finds and scores some beautiful goals. In my point of view, both at a high level, Carlinhos played more”, concluded the former player, also with spells at Santos, Internazionale, Fluminense and Athletico-PR.

Carlos Alberto x Arrascaeta

The controversial comparison began with Carlos Alberto himself, who claimed to have played more than the Uruguayan.

Shortly afterwards, in Zico’s charity game at Maracanã, in 2022, Arrascaeta ‘responded’ with a pen at Carlinhos, which he provoked on social media.

“I want to see them win the World Cup and the Champions League. And a pen for me in the favela is only worth it when it’s complete”, claimed Carlos Alberto.
