Former Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg has come to the defense of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Despite praising the Australian’s performance in his second season, the 2016 F1 champion considers the constant comparisons with his teammate, Lando Norris, unfair.

“It cannot be underestimated that Lando has everything it takes to be a champion in F1. Especially after China, he proved his potential,” Rosberg told Sky Sports. “So the comparison is difficult for Piastri, who also raced for the first time in Shanghai. But overall, he’s doing a good job.”

For Rosberg, Piastri’s biggest challenge is tire management. “That was his ‘Achilles’ heel’ last year, always this excessive wear and tear during races,” said the former driver. “This year, this seemed to improve at times, but in China it became a problem again.”

Rosberg highlights the complexity of modern Formula 1, where many factors influence the result. His advice to Piastri and McLaren is to analyze all the data in detail, especially when the Australian needs to compete directly with Norris.

“Sometimes I’m surprised how some teams don’t explore this information with drivers in detail, but in Oscar’s case, it’s absolutely necessary,” concluded Rosberg.
