Vasco has ‘plan B’ if he can’t agree with Pezzolano, says website

-

Despite Vasco trying to hire coach Paulo Pezzolano, the club drew up a strategy considering the possibility of talks with the commander of Real Valladolid, from Spain, not moving forward.

The RTI Esporte Agency found that the idea of Vasco’s executive director, Pedro Martins, is to try to sign a deal with the Uruguayan coach, who has been in European football for two seasons, as quickly as possible.

Otherwise, the name gaining strength behind the scenes in the football department is Diego Alonso. The 49-year-old Uruguayan has been unemployed since December 16, 2023, when Sevilla lost 3-0 to Getafe in the Spanish Championship.

Since then, his name has been speculated in some Brazilian football clubs. The most recent contact was from São Paulo, when the coach was approached to take over from Thiago Carpini. However, Diego Alonso did not open talks due to private problems.

According to the report, Vasco does not want talks with Paulo Pezzolano to drag on for too long and, therefore, wants the new commander to have time to work in order to take the team out of the relegation zone of the Brazilian Championship.

There is no deadline for the new coach to be hired. Other names preliminarily analyzed by Pedro Martins are not ‘unanimous’. Vasco should present a proposal for Paulo Pezzolano soon. If negotiations do not progress, the manager will try to convince Diego Alonso to take charge of the team this season.

When does Vasco play?

Vasco will play again this Wednesday, May 1st, against Fortaleza, at Arena Castelão, in the first leg of the third phase of the Copa do Brasil. In the confrontation against Tricolor de Aço, the team will be led by interim Rafael Paiva.
