Even though the transfer window closed last Friday (19), Cruzeiro continues to keep an eye on the market. The club’s interim football director, Paulo André updated the status of negotiations for midfielder Matheus Pereira. Furthermore, he warned “points of attention” that will be priorities in the next window.

In an interview this Friday (26), the director admitted that the procedures for signing the number 10 player are progressing well: “Our priority is to acquire Matheus Pereira. There are some problems there, but we are progressing well. I hope to have a happy ending”, he explained at a press conference at Toca II.

This week, the Itatiaia found that Cruzeiro made an offer official to Al-Hilal, from Saudi Arabia, for the midfielder. The Celestial team offered around 7 million euros (R$39 million at current prices) to retain the player’s economic rights. Payment would be made in installments.

Pereira is on loan from Al-Hilal to Cruzeiro until June 30, 2024. The amount charged by the Arabs, initially, would be 12 million euros (somewhere around R$64.8 million). A manager Ronaldo Nazário’s trip to the Saudi worldlast month, aimed to try to reduce the requests from the sheikhs.

Attention points

In this first transfer window of 2024, Cruzeiro agreed to sign ten players. To be able to seek new reinforcements, the celestial board will need to wait until July 10th, when the hiring period opens. According to Paulo André, the club already has “points of attention” and needs in the squad.

“We have some points of attention, clear issues. We are still two months away from the opening of the window. We will be patient to find creative solutions that fit our budget and can help us have more tools to end the year well, much happier than the beginning”, stated Paulo André.

Without great investment power compared to other teams in Series A, Cruzeiro used a specific negotiation model to reach desired players on the market. The Celestials signed loans with an option to buy with Álvaro Barreal and Lucas Villalba, Argentines who lived big before arriving at Toca.
