Red Bull may be about to lose a historic and very important name in Formula 1: Adrian Newey. According to the publication Auto, Motor und Sport, the renowned designer is expected to announce his departure from the team soon.
Newey, 65 years old, has been a fundamental part of Red Bull Racing since 2006. With him on the team, the team won several F1 titles with completely different cars. However, the climate appears to have changed considerably in Milton Keynes.
According to the report, Newey was dissatisfied with the internal power struggles at Red Bull. Furthermore, the implementation of the spending cap puts the British designer at risk of focusing only on the RB17 hypercar project, which he is not excited about, as his passion continues to be Formula 1.
Despite having a contract until the end of 2025, strong rumors indicate that Newey wants to leave at the end of 2024 to take on a new challenge. Where will he go? The future is uncertain, but many are betting on Ferrari, although Aston Martin has also been considered.
There are reports that Newey was recently seen at an airport in Bologna, Italy, and that he may have attended a meeting at Ferrari. At the beginning of the year, there were already rumors of an attack by the Scuderia for the renowned designer.
In the 1990s, Newey, who is currently paid around £10 million at Red Bull, was offered the chance to move to Ferrari. At the time, he opted for McLaren to remain in England, ‘but the temptation was great’, according to Newey himself, who did not want to move to Italy. However, he currently works remotely for Red Bull from his home in South Africa. This could be replicated at Ferrari, should he actually head there.
A possible move to Maranello would place Newey alongside Lewis Hamilton, who will move to Ferrari in 2025. The end of the ‘Newey era’ at Red Bull appears to be near, and Formula 1 could see a major upheaval in the market, which is already quite agitated in relation to the pilots.
