Lewis Hamilton clarified his participation in the film about Formula 1 starring Brad Pitt, which has been being made since last year. Unlike what appears on some websites, where he is listed as part of the cast, the Mercedes driver’s main function is to guarantee the authenticity of the category’s representation.

The film, with no title yet, will have Pitt as the protagonist playing the fictional character ‘Sonny Hayes’, a pilot who returns from retirement. Alongside him will be the young ‘Joshua Pearce’, played by British actor Damson Idris.

In addition to Pitt, the film features Javier Bardem as the owner of ‘APXGP’, a fictional team that was present at the British GP last year to film. Images of Pitt driving a Formula 2 car (modified to look like an F1) at Silverstone have already been released.

For Hamilton, the main objective is for the film to attract both old and new Formula 1 fans, presenting the reality of the category in the most faithful way possible.

“My main point was, ‘Guys, this movie needs to be very authentic.’ We have two different types of fans: the old ones, who grew up listening to BBC F1 music every weekend and watching it with their family, and the new generation who have just discovered the category on Netflix,” he told GQ Magazine.

“I felt like my job was basically to try to draw attention to what was inauthentic: ‘That would never happen.’ ‘That’s how it would be.’ ‘This is how it could happen’. Just giving them advice on what racing is really about and what, as a motorsport fan, would appeal to me and what wouldn’t.”

Asked about one of the coolest experiences he had during filming, Hamilton replied: “Being at Silverstone and discovering that Brad is really a driver at heart. He has genuine skill and talent. I think he always loved motorcycles, and that’s why he watched a lot of races. When I was younger, I worked at a flying school to pay my bills so I could go to these races. Some companies brought 70 people who didn’t even know where they should be on the track. Brad, however, knew exactly which part of the track he should be on”, concluded the seven-time champion.
