Jaime Faria, a 20-year-old young man ranked 287th in the world, is having a dream 2024 season. He has won 20 matches and four titles in a row in the Algarve over the last month and a half, and this weekend he made his best debut in ATP tournaments, successfully passing the qualifying phase of the Millennium Estoril Open.

The young man who was born in Lisbon and grew up in the Algarve defeated in the second and final round of the qualifying phase the Slovak Lukas Klein, ATP number 121 and also having a great season (at another level of competition) by 6-4, 6-7( 3) and 6-1, after 2h08, in a duel that was interrupted by rain in the middle of the second set. It was the best victory in the career of the tennis player who trains at CAR do Jamor in terms of ranking…

“I don’t have many words. I think it’s an incredible moment, a great start to the season, not just Estoril, but I think this is a reward I have from the start of the season and the work I did at the end of last year. It’s incredible . The public that was there today… These were emotions that I had never felt before. It’s about enjoying, enjoying, but keeping your feet on the ground because the main event is coming. I don’t know if I will play on the main court, but I hope so. I think I am well prepared and I have to continue doing my best”, confessed Faria, who already has a guaranteed entry into the top 250 ATP and will now face Frenchman Constant Lestiéne (93rd) in the opening round of the table that starts today.

Yesterday’s journey was also marked by the defeat of the Portuguese Duarte Vale (581st ATP) at the hands of the British Jan Choinski (169th) by 6-3 and 6-4.

Gasquet eliminated by Lucas Pouille

Richard Gasquet, champion of the Millennium Estoril Open in 2015 and currently 120th in the world hierarchy, fell by the wayside yesterday in the qualifying phase of the Portuguese tournament, eliminated by compatriot Lucas Pouille (242nd). In the duel between two Frenchmen who reached the top 10 and were Grand Slam semi-finalists, the youngest (30 years old) triumphed 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2, in two hours of battle. Approaching the age of 38, Richard Gasquet, who played three ATP finals in Portugal, will have competed in our country for the last time in his career…
