Red Bull boss Christian Horner believes the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix exposed a potential weakness of the RB20 on tracks that place heavy demands on the front tyres. Excessive wear and graining on the front tires affected all teams at the Albert Park circuit, where Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz led a one-two with his teammate Charles Leclerc.

With statements by Sergio Perez indicating that Max Verstappen would have difficulty keeping up with Sainz and Ferrari, even if he had finished the race, there are signs that the RB20 is not the dominant and versatile car that was imagined.

The last time Ferrari and Red Bull fought hard for victory was in Las Vegas, another circuit where grain was an issue and the intervention of the Safety Car helped Verstappen overtake Leclerc in that race.

“It’s an area where Ferrari are particularly strong, so it’s probably no coincidence that they were strong in Vegas and here (Australia),” Horner said after the race. “So it’s certainly an area we need to improve on circuits that require strong front tires.”

The next challenge for Red Bull will be in Suzuka, Japan, where the high-speed curves will once again put the RB20’s frontal fragility to the test, in yet another fierce duel with Ferrari.

For those who predicted absolute dominance for Red Bull in 2024, the outcome of the Australian GP offers reasons for optimism. The Japanese GP will be an important test of Horner’s claims, as Verstappen’s early retirement with brake problems in Melbourne made the race a question mark.
