O Salgado Filho Airportin Porto Alegre, became protected by the Tactical Operations Command (COT) of the Federal Policethis Wednesday, 8th, after threats of looting.

The main arrival and departure point for aircraft in Rio Grande do Sul, the location has its operations suspended indefinitely due to the floods that are hitting the State.

COT specializes in high-risk and complex scenarios. In addition to airport security, the group must also support the more than 350 federal police officers who are working to protect flooded roads in the region.

Amid the chaos caused by the rain in the State, 32 people were arrested for attempted looting and robberies and another four on suspicion of rapes in accommodation.

As of early Wednesday afternoon, 100 deaths had been confirmed – with another four under investigation – and 128 missing, in addition to more than 163,000 people displaced. Of the 497 municipalities in the State, at least 417 were affected by the rains.
