During the investment announcement of the New PAC of R$ 18.3 billion, the president stated that the Earth is “paying” for climate change
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Wednesday (May 8, 2024) that the tragedy caused by the rains in Rio Grande do Sul is a “Notice” to humans about climate change.
“What happened in Rio Grande do Sul is a warning for all of us human beings. We need to take into account that the earth is taking its toll”said Lula during the Novo PAC investment announcement (Development Acceleration Program), at Palácio do Planalto.
During his speech, Lula said he did not know the extent of the damage caused by the flood in the State – information already provided by the Minister of Planning and Budget, Simone Tebet. According to the minister, the government will only know the total cost of repairing the damage when the water level drops.
The Chief Executive stated that he wanted to visit all the municipalities that were affected by the rains. The PT member said that government members are “committed” to ensure that Rio Grande do Sul receives everything it “you have the right”.
The State has recorded heavy rains since April 28. The rain destroyed roads and he leaves 95 dead.
INVESTMENT OF R$18 BILLION
The Lula government announced this Wednesday (May 8) an investment of R$ 18.3 billion for the following modalities: water supply in rural areas, urbanization of favelas, land regularization, fleet renewal and prevention of natural disasters.
The projects are in addition to the programs announced by the federal government in August 2023, when the New PAC was launched. One of the flagships of PT administrations in the past, the package establishes investments in public works until 2026.
