The formation of a cold front between the south of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, associated with an extratropical cyclone that is organized in the sea between the Uruguayan coast and the Argentine province of Buenos Aires, should help bring more rain to Rio Grande do Sul. alert was made by Climatempo.

Even though it does not pass through the state, says the agency, this extratropical cyclone could cause wind gusts of up to 100 km/h in several regions of the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Rio Grande do Sul has been suffering since last week with storms that affected more than 400 municipalities until this Tuesday (7) and caused the death of almost 100 people in the state since last week.

During this Wednesday, says Climatempo in a note, there is the possibility of heavy rain in all regions of Rio Grande do Sul, also with the threat of hail.

“The proximity of the extratropical cyclone and the presence of cumulonimbus clouds [verticais] cause wind gusts of 70 km/h to 90 km/h, but which could exceed 100 km/h in some places”, states the agency.

Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology) issued this Tuesday (7) a warning for rain in Rio Grande do Sul on Wednesday. The range includes the capital Porto Alegre.

“Despite the hot weather and no rain in the center-north of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, [na terça]the forecast indicates, starting this Wednesday, the arrival of a cold front that will cause more rain and a sharp drop in temperatures”, published Inmet on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

On Monday (6), the federal agency had already warned of the advance of storms, mainly in the south of Rio Grande do Sul, due to the arrival of the cold front.

On Thursday (9), the tendency is for rain to continue in the north of Rio Grande do Sul, which could still be moderate to heavy, according to Climatempo.

The polar air that spreads over the state could lower thermometer readings throughout Thursday. “Temperatures between 5°C and 10°C are expected to be seen in the central south at dawn on Thursday,” he says.

Governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) stated in an interview and in a video published on social media that Rio Grande do Sul continues to experience a difficult climate period, with the possibility of widespread storms in the coming days, gusts of wind and low temperatures.

“For this Wednesday we have a projection of storms here in Rio Grande do Sul, distributed across the state,” he stated in the video, which he called a climate alert. “This will cause a lot of disruption,” he said, referring to the threat of strong winds and hail.

Furthermore, he stressed that the temperature should drop significantly on Wednesday night. “That’s why we’re asking people to donate blankets and winter clothes to our shelters.”

According to Climatempo, the cold front is only expected to leave Rio Grande do Sul on Sunday (12). However, the threat of rain remains until then and the arrival of cold air could make the temperature drop even further.
