Aerial images show flooded airport in Porto Alegre
Salgado Filho airport, in Porto Alegre, remains underwater after the floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul. Aerial images shown by GloboNews show part of the airport runway dry and another part completely submerged.
This Monday (6) the Brazilian Association of Airlines (Abear) informed that Salgado Filho is closed indefinitely, with all operations suspended. Images show flooding in waiting areas, passenger circulation areas and even airplane landing areas.
Fraport, the airport’s administrator, released a note placing the 30th of this month as the end date for the suspension of operations. The airport has been closed since last Friday (3) due to the rising waters of Lake Guaíba, in the capital, which reached the highest level ever recorded, 5.33 m, on Sunday morning (5).
The elevation is expected to remain above the flood limit (3 m) for the next 10 days. Before the levels reached this month, the record was 1941 (4.76 m).
