Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has been admitted to the Vila Nova Star Hospital, in São Paulo, since Monday night (6).

Bolsonaro has erysipelas. He was diagnosed while in Manaus last weekend.

On Saturday (4), during an event by PL Mulher do Amazonas, Bolsonaro spoke with his arm bandaged and said that, in addition to erysipelas, he was suffering from dehydration. That day, he went to the hospital and was discharged.

“When people’s immunity drops due to a variety of problems, erysipelas is a common occurrence,” he said at the time.

What is erysipelas?

An inflammatory disease that affects the skin, erysipelas can affect the adipose cell tissue (fat layer of the skin). It is caused by a bacteria that spreads through the lymphatic vessels and mainly affects the lower limbs, such as legs and feet, being more common in the elderly population and in people with diabetes or obesity.

In infection, Streptococcus bacteria penetrate the skin through wounds, insect bites, ulcers or chilblains (a type of ringworm) and spread through the lymphatic vessels. However, other types of bacteria can also cause erysipelas, such as Staphylococcus aureus. According to the Ministry of Health, this is not a contagious disease.

Dehydration

According to people close to Bolsonaro interviewed by CNN, the former president developed dehydration even before traveling to Manaus.

However, on Sunday (5), the former president was admitted to Santa Júlia hospital, in the capital of Amazonas. On the same day, he posted on social media that he still had no discharge forecast.

Transfer to São Paulo

After his hospitalization in Manaus, federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), son of the former president, announced that he would be transferred to Brasília.

ANDHowever, a condition of abdominal discomfort that appeared in the early hours of Monday (6) made Bolsonaro choose to go to São Paulo.

He arrived at Vila Nova Star Hospital, in the south of São Paulo, at around 8 pm, and got out of the ambulance in a wheelchair.

The former chief executive will be attended to by surgeon Antonio Luiz de Macedo, a doctor who has been with him since he was stabbed in 2018, in the midst of the election campaign.
