In a unanimous decision, the Chamber of Deputies approved last Monday, 6th, a project that declares a state of public calamity in Rio Grande do Sul until the end of 2024. The measure frees up federal resources to assist in the State’s recovery after the storms that hit more than 364 cities.

The project now goes to the Senate. If approved, it will facilitate assistance to victims and the reconstruction of affected areas, without impacting national fiscal goals. Resources from the Union to the State are estimated at around R$5 billion and come from funds from Itaipu and Petrobras.
PDL 236/24, derived from a message from the Executive Branch, and reported by deputy Osmar Terra (MDB-RS), will be sent to the Senate. The parliamentarian highlighted the importance of joining forces in view of the critical situation faced by Rio Grande do Sul.
Flood victims
According to Civil Defense, the storms in RS left 85 dead, 111 missing and approximately 150,000 homeless, of which 20,000 are sheltered in shelters and the rest welcomed by friends or family. The storms affected 364 municipalities.
