The protests began in Columbia (New York) and spread across the country. University students from the United States camp on campuses in pro-Palestinian demonstrations and against Israel’s actions in Gaza, and call for the severing of relations with governments and companies that support the Israeli government’s actions in Palestinian territory. In response, university commands called the police, but security agents responded with disproportionate violence. Last weekend alone, more than 200 students were detained – since the start of the demonstrations, the number has exceeded 800. To explain how acts at American universities affect the presidential dispute between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, Natuza Nery receives Marcelo Lins , GloboNews commentator, and Mauricio Moura, professor at George Washington University. Lins recalls how the protests were born and grew – and the possible consequences for Biden’s campaign, already in a complicated situation in the race for re-election. Mauricio contextualizes how freedom of expression – a value considered fundamental in the country and guaranteed by the Constitution – becomes a central piece in the country’s political debate.
