Since March 2023, student Larissa Moraes Carvalho, aged 31, has lived in a vegetative state, after undergoing orthognathic surgery to correct changes in the growth of her jaw. The surgery took place at Santa Casa de Misericórdia in Juiz de Fora, in Minas Gerais.

After the procedure, the young woman felt unwell and had a cardiorespiratory arrest. Larissa was resuscitated and was hospitalized for more than a year, before returning to her family home where she is now undergoing home treatment.

To G1, the student’s father, Ricardo Carvalho, said that after the surgery, he saw his daughter being taken to the room with her eyes turned away, but he thought it was normal after surgery. According to him, he was asked to stay outside the room. When he entered, he saw that they were giving his daughter a cardiac massage. A nurse even reassured him, saying that his heartbeat had returned.

One of the many questions the family still has is: when did the cardiorespiratory arrest begin and what was done during that period? The student’s father said he asked doctors many questions that have not yet been answered.

The Public Ministry of Minas Gerais ordered the Civil Police to open an investigation.

Furthermore, the family hired two private experts, who found the following possible flaws in the surgical procedure:

  • Lack of details in the surgical description.
  • Inadequate completion of the anesthetic and post-anesthetic form.
  • Possible inadequate transport of the patient within the hospital.
  • Lack of identification of the rhythm of cardiorespiratory arrest.
  • Lack of mandatory exams and inadequate control of temperature and blood glucose measurements after cardiorespiratory arrest.
  • Failures in the post-anesthetic period: the patient would have been observed for 20 minutes and not an hour, as recommended.

While the family awaits answers, they also try to give all the necessary attention to Larissa, who needs 24-hour care.
