Madonna in Rio: closures, security and transport; find out everything about the scheme set up for the show | Culture

Rio City Hall will install 18 screens on Copacabana Beach for Madonna’s concert on May 4th. The equipment will be located at different points along the coast, in the directions of Leme and Posto 6 (behind the stage). The objective is to reach those who do not want to be close to the stage, in front of the Copacabana Palace. Around 1.5 million people are expected.

Details of the operational and security scheme for the event were disclosed at a press conference this Thursday. Check out the main points below.

Security

According to the Military Police, 3,200 agents will act in policing in vehicles and observation towers spread across the coast, in addition to 18 inspection points with 150 metal detectors and facial recognition cameras. The corporation will set up an Integrated Command and Control Center (CICC) base in Praça do Lido – next to a central office for public bodies -, where images of the devices will be sent, including those of the agents’ uniforms. In addition, policing will be reinforced on expressways, highways and show exits, as well as at Aterro do Flamengo, the Gentileza Intermodal Terminal, Terreirão do Samba and Central do Brasil.

In the case of the Civil Police, there will be staff mainly in police stations in the South Zone, including the Special Tourism Assistance Police Station (DEAT). The intelligence sector will monitor possible planned crimes. In addition, the Child and Adolescent Protection Police Station (DPCA) will be located, on May 4th, at the Special Police Station for Assistance to Senior Citizens (DEAPTI), in Copacabana, to facilitate the handling of juvenile offenders.

The Fire Department will mobilize 800 soldiers and will have an advanced medical post at Posto 6 in Copacabana, as well as an aircraft to respond to serious incidents.

Interdictions

Access to Copacabana will be completely blocked from 7:30 pm.

The president of CET-Rio, Joaquim Diniz, explained that, from midnight on May 4th, chartered buses will no longer be able to access Copacabana from Botafogo and Ipanema. Vehicles will be able to park at Terreirão do Samba, in the center of Rio.

At 7am, the Avenida Atlântica lane along the waterfront will be closed, as in leisure areas, on Sundays and holidays. From 11 am, the road will be completely blocked. At 6pm, the 28 blocking points will begin at the access points to Copacabana, such as Enseada de Botafogo and Corte do Cantagalo. From this time onwards, only buses and taxis enter. at 7:30 pm, vehicles no longer access the neighborhood. Lockdowns will be lifted at 4am on Sunday (May 5).

Transport

Subway

Boarding times at Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos (the closest to the stage) and Cantagalo stations, in Copacabana, will be extended until 4am on Sunday. The other stations in the system will operate normally, from 5 am to midnight. After the usual closing time, they will only be open for the show’s public to disembark. MetrôRio recommends purchasing a ticket to facilitate boarding.

Cardeal Arcoverde station will only operate for disembarkation from 4pm to 10pm. After this time, it will only be possible to board with pre-purchased cards or contactless payment methods.

Bus

The city hall will create a special direct line from the Gentileza Intermodal Terminal to Copacabana, without stops, starting at 1 pm. The fare will be R$8.60 (round trip), with payment via the Jaé system. The card can be recharged via the app. The return of the show on this line will be between 0am and 4am, with boarding at Enseada de Botafogo, as well as other itineraries: 492 (Banking, on the Island); 474 (Alligator); 415 (Plant); 483 (Penha); 167 (Kindness); and 100 (Central).

BRT

The Transcarioca, Transoeste, Transolímpica and Transbrasil corridors will operate 24 hours a day, while the executive service to Galeão Airport will operate between 6am and midnight.

Train (SuperVia)

The trip to Copacabana will be according to the concessionaire’s schedule. For the return trip, Central do Brasil station, which closes at 9:15 pm, will reopen at midnight, to serve the public. There will be two trips for each branch throughout the morning.

VLT

VLT line 1 (Santos Dumont x Terminal Intermodal Gentileza) will operate 24 hours a day on May 4th.

Health

The Municipal Health Department will set up three medical aid stations near the stage, in Praça do Lido; on Avenida Princesa Isabel; and on Rua República do Peru. There will also be 30 ambulances with ICU and 550 sanitary cabins. Furthermore, Cedae will distribute free water on the day of the show.

Public order

The Municipal Secretariat of Public Order and the Municipal Guard will have a staff of 1.13 thousand agents, with inspection actions in taxis, complementary transport, kiosks and stalls, street commerce and irregular parking. Secretary Brenno Carnevale reinforced that so-called “playpens” on the sidewalk and in the sand are prohibited – as on New Year’s Eve – and that vehicles parked in prohibited locations will be towed.

Navy and Port Authority

The maritime area in the Copacabana Beach region will be closed to avoid possible accidents, as boats will gather at sea for the show. Since April 16, the Rio Port Authority has carried out inspections to allow access to the restricted area.
