“It was rock bottom,” confesses actress Scarlett Johansson, whose fortunes changed with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Scarlett Johansson is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars today, but there was a time when she wasn’t happy with the direction her career was taking. In fact, she herself confessed to Variety that she felt lost and that there was a specific moment when she was about to throw in the towel. All of this was mainly the fault of an excellent science fiction film that she was rejected from.

We always forget it exists, but this film with Scarlett Johansson is a science fiction masterpiece

“I wanted this role with all my might”

The actress remembers that the lowest point in her career coincided with two films for which she was rejected. Fate meant that the story had a happy ending in the case of Iron Man 2, but with Gravity she wasn’t so lucky, as she remembers:

I wanted this role so much. It was rock bottom. I felt very frustrated and hopeless. Like, ‘Am I doing the job right?’ The job I was offered seemed deeply unsatisfactory. I think I was offered every Marilyn Monroe script ever. I thought, ‘Is this the end of the creative path?’

Alfonso Cuarón’s film ultimately starred Sandra Bullock, but in Iron Man 2 she benefited from the fact that Emily Blunt had to abandon the project at the last minute due to a previous contractual obligation, which forced her to do it in her place Gulliver’s Travels.

Scarlett Johansson herself recalls that the Marvel film “wasn’t going to move forward in terms of how my character was written, but there was potential for what it could be – a potential for growth in subsequent films.” And so it was, because at the time she herself highlighted the progressive distancing from the hypersexualization that Black Widow suffered, which later had its own film released late in 2021.

In addition to her success in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlett Johansson’s career took an important turn in the following years, when she won a Tony for her appearance in the play “A View from the Bridge”to which we must add her work in acclaimed films such as Under the Skin or Her: “Suddenly, I thought: ‘I still love this job’. And that reignited my passion for the work. I felt less anxious.”

Scarlett Johansson’s latest theatrical release is Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City. Her next film will be How to Sell the Moon, which opens in theaters on July 11, and it is also possible that she will be the protagonist of a new Jurassic World film, but it is not yet finalized.
