The feature film is directed by Alex Garland, the same director of Civil War and Ex_Machina.

If this year Alex Garland brought the acclaimed Civil War to cinemas, in 2018, it was the filmmaker’s turn to give birth to a psychedelic science fiction. At the time, he released it in North American darkrooms, Annihilationa film that became a huge commercial failure, but gained cult status when it debuted on Netflix.

In Annihilation (in the original) Area X is a mysterious and remote place controlled by a powerful force that humanity does not yet understand. TOO INTELLECTUAL FOR THE PUBLIC?

Due to a poorly received test screening, David Ellison, Skydance’s financier and producer, was concerned that the film was “too intellectual” and “too complicated to understand”, requiring changes to make it more appealing to audiences. However, Garland put her foot down and refused to make changes to her project, supported by producer Scott Rudin.

When it officially debuted in the United States, Annihilation represented a major financial disaster for the companies involved. The feature film had a budget speculated to be $40 million, but only $43 million was raised at the box office.

In this way, the film quickly gained popularity in the Netflix catalog, becoming a huge cult success. Critics gave wide praise to Garland’s work, defining Annihilation as a beautiful psychedelic trip.

On Rotten Tomatoes, a reference website in terms of cinema, the production appears with 88% approval from experts. The plot is led by big names in the audiovisual world, such as Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez and Tessa Thompson.

For those who haven’t had the opportunity to see it for themselves, it’s worth mentioning that Annihilation is also available on Prime Video, YouTube and Apple TV.
