Actor is the protagonist of comedy that takes place inside an amusement park

ORLANDO – Walking through the city’s parks Universal in Orlando is seeing, all the time, characters from different brands and creators. On a quick walk, you might come across Beetlejuice taking photos in a corner and, shortly after, fall into the magical world of Harry Potter. Then, walk a little further and enter the jungle of Jurassic Park while you see, in the distance, the activations of The Simpsons. How to make a film here?

It was this answer that the feature film Two is Too Many in Orlando needed to respond over almost a decade. “It was a 10-year project and a dream”, says director Rodrigo Van Der Put, in an interview with Estadão inside the park in Orlando. “[A dificuldade] it was the logistics of filming here. Many films filmed one scene or another inside the park, but we filmed almost everything. Preparing to record took a long, long, long time.” The film hits theaters this Thursday, 28.

Really, there was no way to find another way out. Two is Too Many in Orlando otherwise shoot the entire film in the parks. After all, the feature film tells the story of João (Eduardo Sterblitch), a boy in love with the world of Jurassic Park and who dreams of visiting the Orlando complex to see the Velociraptor from the film up close. What he didn’t expect was that his boss would ask him to take her son along – to hand him over to his father. Is there any way to say no?

But the boy is spoiled, his father doesn’t show up to pick him up and João becomes a babysitter and learns to live with differences to save his job and overcome a childhood trauma.

For this idea to come to life, producer Luciana Boal Marinho says that the film went through some changes. Initially, the idea is that João was in love with Harry Potter – today, perhaps, still the hottest attraction in the parks, with people strolling through the scenes all the time. But they didn’t get authorization. That’s when they came up with the idea of portraying him as a person passionate about Jurassic Park.

It was a legal nightmare”, explained Luciana, while the reporter awaited entry for the film’s screening in Orlando. “Everything had to be approved by several offices, with different studios. And we didn’t imagine a lot of things: we weren’t allowed to wear a team t-shirt. Minions, for example, and a slipper Jurassic Park. We needed to think about everything.”

But it worked: the film ended up starring, alongside Edu and Pedro, the new VelociCoaster roller coaster. Inspired by the universe of Jurassic Park, it has loops that leave even the traditional Hulk roller coaster a few steps lower. The character’s biggest challenge, therefore, is to face the toy – the report from Estadão He waited for the group to ride the roller coaster outside, without the courage to face the ride’s ups and downs.

Recordings between schedules

Another point of concern that arose was simple: how to record the film without disrupting the functioning of the park, but also without making it sound artificial – without, for example, having visitors passing by? It was necessary to have a sharp agenda to unite the two worlds.

“We woke up very early. We arrived here at two, three, four at the most in the morning. Then, lunch was at seven in the morning. It was the only way we could film,” says Sterblitch. The idea, therefore, was to record the actors on rides or in certain areas of the park when it was closed, then scenes outside with the public walking around. “It really was a strategy. But it was interesting, as we had the feeling of working in the park.”

Pedro Burgarelli, just 14 years old, lived a dream during filming: he lived in the park during the 40 days of filming – and he didn’t even know Orlando before the film. “It was very different. A truly unique experience”, says the child actor. “But I liked waking up at 2am, seeing people behind the scenes, restocking.”

And everything went well. Two is Too Much in Orlando is beautiful and funny. The relationship between João and Carlos Alberto, the boss’s son, is convincing – and there is a good laugh, especially in the rivalry they create with Dr. Anderson Cabelo (Daniel Furlan), another visitor.

Sterblitch, in fact, reaffirms himself as one of the great names in humor: he brings all his baggage into a comedy reminiscent of Jim Carrey, while focusing on good jokes in a humor that doesn’t offend. “These actors who make movies we’ve seen 60,000 times, like Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Peter Sellers, Eddie Murphy, make comedies that we’ve seen over and over again and will see forever,” he says. “I wanted to be inspired by this feeling I had when I saw these films. I find the nostalgia that comes with watching a film interesting.”

‘I can only work happily’

Anyone looking from afar has no idea. But Eduardo Sterblitch appears to be a shy person – during the red carpet in the United States Two is Too Many in Orlando, at the beginning of the month, the actor even seemed a little uncomfortable with so much attention. You could even say that he didn’t even expect to be where he is today, thinking that he started with the more outrageous humor of Pânico, like Freddie Mercury Prateado and Poderoso Puniga.

Today, your career is diverse and increasingly interesting. In an interview with Estadão in Orlando during the promotion of his new film, he says what he wants most: to communicate with the whole family, without barriers. Today, in addition to his dramatic work in The Others, he is also the star of the musical Beetlejuice, now in theaters in São Paulo. With the new film, he seeks to communicate with the whole family – including the little ones. And soon, it will be in the expected Auto da Compadecida 2 and Grande Sertão.

What motivates you today? “We always receive projects, we always receive invitations. And I quickly accept the ones we have to accept”, says Eduardo. “[O que me atraiu neste filme] It was being able to talk about all these issues that the film talks about in a very simple, easy to digest way. That got me. And also working with a child: this renewed my comedy, my way of working. It gives me new energy. I always work like this, with things that I will be passionate about doing. I can only work happily.”

In this vein, in searching for what makes him happy, Sterblitch follows a diverse career, with more successful projects than wrong ones. “This is to show TV Globo that I can work in any role,” he says, laughing. “I create Big Brother tests, I upload things. I just don’t want to be unemployed.”
