A student registered the flames and smoke coming out of the living room window. The causes are still being investigated. (Check out the video below).

Students, faculty and staff who were on campus at the time of the incident were evacuated following guidance from the university.

Classes at the Institute of Biosciences and the Institute of Geosciences and Exact Sciences (IGCE) are suspended for safety.

Fire hits zoology laboratory at Unesp’s Biocences Institute in Rio Claro

According to Unesp, the fire started around 4 pm in the building that houses classrooms, labs and faculty rooms. The team from the Biosciences Institute tried to control the beginning of the flames with extinguishers, but failed.

The fire spread quickly and took on great proportions. Also according to the institution, there was the loss of materials, including a historical zoology collection. “There is significant material losses, still being scaled“, the university said in a statement. The Fire Department was still at the scene working on controlling the flames until the last update of this report.

A fire broke out on the afternoon of this Wednesday (31), around 4 pm, the central building of the Biosciences Institute (IB) on Unesp’s Rio Claro campus. The site houses classrooms, laboratories and teachers’ rooms. The causes of the fire are still being investigated. When the fire started, the main security measures were taken and the space was promptly evacuated without any casualties. Firefighters were called and are still at the scene trying to control the fire, which spread quickly. There are significant material losses, still being scaled. The direction of the campus informs that the classes in the two university units of Unesp in Rio Claro, the Institute of Biosciences and the Institute of Geosciences and Exact Sciences (IGCE), are interrupted for security reasons.
