The death of a 32-year-old woman in Ecoporanga, in the northwest of Espírito Santo, will need to be explained by a hospital in the municipality after family members reported negligence.

According to information from the Tribune NewsGessika Dettmann died this Tuesday (07), after, according to her family, spending hours without receiving adequate care at a local emergency room.

What happened

Gessika reportedly started feeling unwell last Wednesday and, at the weekend, started to have a fever. On Monday (06), the woman went to a dengue care point in Ecoporanga, in the Benedito Monteiro neighborhood.

At the location, professionals asked her to go to a health center to be tested for the disease — however, upon arriving at the clinic, family members were informed that she would need to undergo a private exam, as there were no tests available at the unit.

Gessika then took the test at a private laboratory, which confirmed that she had dengue fever. With the result in hand, family members scheduled an appointment for Tuesday morning, and waited for hours to be seen.

According to the family, after being treated, Gessika’s health condition worsened. She began to report weakness, muscle pain, feeling faint, shortness of breath, fever, low blood pressure and looking pale. The woman also said she had chest pain, but hospital staff said the symptoms were normal and related to dehydration.

Gessika was hospitalized for around 10 hours and, during this period, she would have taken more than 3 liters of serum for hydration. During the treatment, the doctor in charge stated that the woman was improving — while Gessika’s companions stated that the condition continued to worsen.

Still in the emergency room, family members recorded moments in which they argued with the doctor, asking for care and seriousness in helping the woman. In the images, it is possible to see Gessika lying on the floor and then being placed unconscious in a wheelchair by local employees.

After fainting several times, Gessika was transferred unconscious to the Alceu Melgaço Filho State Hospital, in Barra de São Francisco, at around 11pm. There was no place for the woman in the ICU, and she ended up being taken to another area.

According to the victim’s sister, Gessika suffered three cardiac arrests at the time she was to be intubated. There was an attempt to resuscitate the woman, but without success. At this hospital, also according to the family, employees questioned the delay in taking the woman there, as it was a serious case.

Investigation

According to an investigation by the TV Tribuna/SBT, Ecoporanga City Hall ordered the hospital to investigate and explain Gessika’s death. The woman’s family informed the report that the doctor responsible for the care was removed from his position for an indefinite period of time.

In a statement, the hospital lamented Gessika’s death and stated that it will cooperate with the investigations.
