According to the report, the conflicts in Mato Grosso involved 20,660 people, including indigenous people, quilombolas, settlers, landless people, squatters and rubber tappers. The report also shows that the State had an average of 94 conflicts, from 2017 to 2023.

“The lack of titling of quilombos, demarcation of indigenous territories, allocation of public lands and expropriation of large estates for Agrarian Reform, as well as the failure to carry out free, prior and informed consultations, is what makes the three levels of executive governments are categorized as omissive and conniving”says an excerpt from the report.

Conflicts in the countryside account for more than 2 thousand cases in Brazil (Reproduction/MST)

Among the conflicts highlighted by the CPT are one in the Enawenê-Nawê, Adowinã and Rio Preto Indigenous Land, located in the municipalities of Juína, Comodoro and Sapezal, involving around 584 indigenous people; and another in a settlement between the municipalities of Tapurah and Itanhangá, which involves approximately 240 settlers.

The document also shows that the conflicts involved six death threats, in the municipalities of Jaciara (2), Santa Terezinha (3) and São Félix do Araguaia (1). According to the document, in 261 incidents of violence, the State is among the agents that caused the most violence to the people of the countryside, waters and forests in 2023.

One of the studies presented in the report shows that the Human and Earth Rights Forum (FDHT) and the CPT reported a brutal action by the Military Police Rural Patrol at Campamento Renascer, Gleba Mestre I, municipality of Jaciara, in October 2023. At least ten workers were injured while working and were surprised by the police action.
