Minas PM troops embark for RS with no date to return: ‘We will stay there as long as necessary’

Military police officers from Minas Gerais embark this Wednesday (8) for Rio Grande do Sul, where they will help in rescuing victims of the rains and also with security in the state, which records looting, robberies and thefts amid the tragedy that affects the most of 336 cities in the state.

In total, 35 police officers are going to Rio Grande do Sul on a land trip that should last more than 26 hours. Aid also includes minibuses, vehicles and boats.

The PM of Minas has already sent a plane and a helicopter to Rio Grande do Sul, in addition to seven police officers from the aviation command, as highlighted by Major Layla Brunnela, spokesperson for the PM.

“These 35 police officers are going to reinforce this ground, to support the logistics issue. We are going with eight vehicles and four boats that will support the ordinary policing, in what we do in terms of preventive and repressive public security. We will form garrisons that are on site at the moment and also supporting the issue of rescues,” he said.

Before boarding, the soldiers were immunized with seven types of vaccines. The major highlighted that there is no return date. “There is no expectation of a return, because we know that public safety issues are beginning to worsen in the aftermath of the tragedy. So, we are making ourselves available to the state of Rio Grande do Sul to start the mission and stay there as long as necessary to be able to support them,” she explained.

Deaths

The rain tragedies in Rio Grande do Sul caused 95 deaths by the beginning of this Wednesday evening (8), with four cases being evaluated. Governor Eduardo Leite confirmed that 131 people are missing. At least 401 cities were affected, which represents 80.6% of the total of 497 cities in Rio Grande do Sul.
