Engineer Paulo Roberto Cabral Melo, former technical manager for Braskem in Alagoas, was absent from Braskem’s CPI this Tuesday, 7th. He benefited from a habeas corpus granted by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, Federal Supreme Court, to remain silent during the testimony, but chose to miss the session.

Senator Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) informed, however, that Cabral Melo is expected to appear next week, and legal measures will be taken to ensure his participation and clarification on topics pertinent to the CPI.

“The habeas corpus was to remain silent and not to be absent. Next week, Mr. Paulo Roberto will be here and we will take the legal and legal measures so that he can testify and speak about the issues that interest the CPI”

Paulo Roberto Cabral de Melo was general manager of the Salgema mining plant, now Braskem, in Maceió, from 1976 to 1997. He is currently managing partner of the company Consalt Consultoria Mineral, which provides services to Braskem. He will be heard as a witness, under obligation.

According to senator Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE), in a summons request (REQ 91/2024), Cabral de Melo is identified by the Federal Police as a suspect in his role as technical manager, being the target of search and seizure warrants along with with other Braskem employees.

Investigation

The CPI was created at the request of Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) to investigate the effects of the legal and socio-environmental responsibility of the mining company Braskem in the subsidence of the soil in several neighborhoods of Maceió. The company has been extracting rock salt — used, for example, in the manufacture of PVC — since the 1970s on the outskirts of Lagoa Mundaú, in the capital of Alagoas, but stopped exploration in 2019.
