President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Tuesday (7) that he wants to negotiate with businesspeople to relieve payroll taxes. The statement was made in an interview with radio stations during the program Good morning, Presidentproduced by Brazilian Communication Company (EBC).ebc.gif?id=1593759&o=node

“The businessman wants to reduce what he pays. Will he turn this into new jobs? Will he turn this into a salary increase? Will he turn this into stability? Exemption, the way they want it, is just to increase profit. That’s what they want. We want there to be a counterpart.”

According to Lula, the government decided to ask the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to suspend payroll tax relief in order to invite businesspeople from the sectors involved to sit at the table and negotiate: “let each businessman say what he is going to do”.

“This thing about saying it’s about keeping a job, no one guarantees that they keep a job. What is the contract that says he will guarantee employment? Who says that, in the first crisis, he doesn’t send people away? There’s nothing written. What we want is just seriousness from businesspeople.”
