Argentina offers aircraft, health teams, police and divers to help Rio Grande do Sul | Policy

Argentina offered this Monday (6) help for Rio Grande do Sul, hit by heavy rains in recent weeks. Javier Milei’s government offered aircraft, health and police teams, as well as divers to help rescue the gauchos (read more below).

This Sunday (5), Uruguay also announced aid to the Brazilian state and agreed to send aircraft, speedboats and drones to Brazil. Another neighboring country that was ready to help was Venezuela, but until the last update of this report, it had not detailed how.

The Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul updated the number of deaths to 85 due to the storms hitting the state. The bulletin released early this Monday evening (6) also indicates that there are another 4 deaths being investigated. The state records 134 missing and 339 injured.

Government of Rio sends help for tragedy in RS

“As a result of the serious floods that occurred in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, the Government of the Argentine Republic, through the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Security and the White Helmets Commission of this Itamaraty, offered the Government of the Federative Republic of Brazil the their full collaboration”, stated the Argentine government in a statement.

According to Argentina, the following will be made available:

  • brigade made up of 20 soldiers and dogs from the Argentine Federal Police;
  • logistics experts from the White Helmets Commission, a humanitarian assistance body of the Argentine State;
  • 1 plane for transporting people and/or cargo Hercules C-130;
  • 3 helicopters for transfer and evacuations;
  • mobile health team;
  • tactical divers from the Argentine Navy;
  • engineering units with boats; It is
  • 2 water purification stations and boxes of water purification tablets.

“The Argentine Republic reiterates its solidarity with the Government and people of the Federative Republic of Brazil in the face of the tragic consequences caused by the floods that hit the State of Rio Grande do Sul”, stated the Argentine government in a statement.

Situation of Rio Grande do Sul

According to the state’s Civil Defense, there are 201,500 people away from home. Of this total, 47.6 thousand are in shelters and 153.8 thousand are homeless (people staying with family or friends).

Rio Grande do Sul has 385 of its 497 municipalities with some report of problems related to the storm, with 1.178 million people affected.

The forecast of rain from the middle of this week in areas already hit by storms puts the state on alert again. Images taken by the Amazônia 1 satellite, operated by the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), and obtained exclusively by g1 show a scaled view of the before and after of the biggest tragedy in Rio Grande do Sul.

The mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo (MDB), for example, decreed water rationing in the city. With the shutdown of a treatment plant this Monday afternoon, around 85% of the population is without water supply from the Municipal Department of Water and Sewage (Dmae).
