SC sends more reinforcements to Rio Grande do Sul; firefighters have already rescued more than 1,500 people

Santa Catarina will send new reinforcements to Rio Grande do Sul this Monday (6). A team of 39 military firefighters will exchange with the 32 who are in the State and have already been responsible for rescuing more than 1,500 people and 200 animals.

The State has been hit by rain since Monday (29). According to the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul, 75 people died and 103 people were missing this Sunday (5).

In addition to the team, the CBMSC (Santa Catarina Military Fire Department) reported that ten 4×4 vehicles, 17 boats, 11 outboard engines, drones and equipment for rescue in landslide areas are being sent.

“Our teams have been working around the clock in Lajeado, Santa Cruz do Sul and more recently, in the Greater Porto Alegre region since the first day of May. This rotation is necessary and fundamental for the firefighters to continue operating at full strength”, states the Deputy Commander-General of the CBMSC, Colonel Jefferson de Souza.

According to governor Jorginho Mello, Santa Catarina was the first state to send aid to Rio Grande do Sul. The teams sent came from the battalions of Florianópolis, Curitibanos, Blumenau, Criciúma, Itajaí, Tubarão, Canoinhas, São José and Balneário Camboriú.

Firefighters rescued 800 people stranded in a school in Rio Grande do Sul

On Saturday (4), the team from Santa Catarina was called to rescue 100 children who were stranded on the second floor of a school.

However, upon arriving there, the military saw that the place was now being used as a shelter for families and found approximately 800 people there.

For the rescue, firefighters worked for 14 uninterrupted hours at the scene.
