The rains in the south of the country caused death and disruption in more than 30 cities in Santa Catarina. After hitting Rio Grande do Sul, with a chaotic scenario with floods and more than 50 deaths, the rain system favored the occurrence of storms in SC, starting between the afternoon and evening of last Monday in the regions of the South Coast and parts of the Southern Plateau. In the Greater West, the rain became more intense from Thursday (2), arriving accompanied by lightning, wind and hail.

In a balance released this Saturday (4), the Civil Defense of Santa Catarina highlighted the volumes of rain recorded in the State. Between Wednesday (1st) and Saturday (5th), the accumulated between the Grande Oeste, Planalto Sul and Litoral Sul varied from 100 to 200 millimeters, with occasional measurements approaching 250 millimeters.

Due to the heavy rains, Santa Catarina had several incidents related to bad weather, mainly in the regions closest to Rio Grande do Sul. There were cases of flooding, floods and floods, as well as strong winds and even a tornado, which hit the municipality of Passos Maia.

According to Civil Defense, as of Saturday (4) a total of 33 cities reported rain events. Four of them declared an emergency situation. The South and Midwest regions were the most affected.
“In terms of human damage, a death was recorded in the municipality of Ipira, after the car was swept away by a flood,” the Civil Defense said in a statement.
In addition, 193 displaced people and 46 homeless people were registered. Among the most impacted municipalities are Praia Grande, with 60 people displaced; São Carlos, with 40 homeless people; and Capinzal, with 19 displaced people.

In Caçador, a gust of wind caused pine trees to fall, which hit a vehicle, leaving one person injured.
According to the agency, between the municipalities of Passos Maia and Ponte Serrada, in the West, a strong storm generated a tornado last Monday afternoon (29), which destroyed a eucalyptus forest. Other cities, such as Orleans and Içara, as well as the highway that connects Piratuba to Ipira, suffered landslides and erosion.
River levels
According to Civil Defense monitoring, the rains caused a rise in river levels in several river basins in Santa Catarina. In the South Coast region, the Mampituba River reached an emergency level in the municipalities of Praia Grande and São João do Sul. In the Araranguá River basin, smaller rivers caused floods.
“The rains that occurred throughout the Uruguay river basin caused flooding on the border with Rio Grande do Sul, reaching emergency levels in the municipalities of Itapiranga, Águas de Chapecó, São Carlos and Palmitos. With the decrease in rainfall, the Uruguay River entered recession on Friday (3), maintaining this trend throughout this Saturday (4). Floods were also recorded in the Greater West, such as in Concórdia, in the Jacutinga River basin, and Ponte Serrada, Capinzal, Ipira and Piratuba, in the region around the mouth of the Rio do Peixe”, the Civil Defense said in a note.
