O Ministry of Health confirmed the mobilization of 60 professionals from the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) and the Grupo Hospitalar Conceição (GhC) to provide assistance to the population of the Rio Grande do Sul affected by the storms that devastate the region. National Force Teams Unified Health System (SUS), according to the ministry, also arrived in the State to reinforce service. The objective is for professionals to act to reduce the risk of exposure to the population, in addition to reducing illnesses and injuries. In a statement, the ministry reported having sent 20 emergency kits to the state, consisting of 32 types of medicine and 16 types of supplies each, including gloves, syringes and bandages. The material is enough to serve up to 30 thousand people for a period of 30 days. The department will also install an Emergency Operations Center (COE) for extreme natural events in the state. “The COE allows the analysis of data and information to support decision-making by managers and technicians, in defining appropriate strategies and actions to face public health emergencies”. “To project damage and outline strategies, a team from the Health and Environment Surveillance Secretariat of the Ministry of Health is in Rio Grande do Sul, seeking to avoid major problems in health units, guide the state and municipalities, and support the process of recovery of the affected area.”

In total, 235 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul have so far been affected by the storms, totaling 351,639 people affected. Of these, 17,087 are homeless and 7,165 in shelters. In an interview last Thursday (2), Governor Eduardo Leite, from Rio Grande do Sul, highlighted that the numbers should rise over the next few days. “With the deepest pain in my heart, I can say that it will be even more than that, because we are not able to access certain locations”, he concluded.
