The city of Passos Maia, in the west of Santa Catarina, was hit by a tornado on Thursday afternoon (2). Images recorded after the phenomenon show dozens of eucalyptus trees toppled and twisted, as well as trees ripped from the ground.

The passage of the tornado was recorded by Chapecó’s meteorological radar and confirmed in an analysis by Civil Defense experts. The storms approached around 3:40 pm and also caused damage in Ponte Serrada.

The rains and storms in the region have been caused by the action of a cold front in the South of Brazil, combined with the flow of a hot and humid air mass coming from the north of the country. This instability has caused gales and intense rain, with trees falling, as well as flooding and flash floods.

According to Civil Defense, these storms still have the potential for electrical discharges, intense gusts of wind and hail due to the intensity of the rain in a short period of time.

More storms are expected
The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) published a “great danger” alert related to storms and accumulated rain that are expected to hit Santa Catarina this Friday (3). According to the agency, strong winds with gusts above 60 km/h are expected, the occurrence of electrical discharges, possible hail and heavy rainfall that could exceed 100 mm between the north of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and the south of Santa Catarina.
The most affected areas should be the Serrana region, Oeste Catarinense, Vale do Itajaí, Grande Florianópolis and Sul Catarinense. Inmet advised the population to turn off electrical appliances and the general energy supply, observe changes in the slopes, remain in a sheltered location and in the event of a flood, or similar, protect belongings from the water wrapped in plastic bags.
Minimum temperatures should be between 17°C and 22°C in the West, Far West and on the coast and vary between 12°C and 18°C in other areas. Maximum temperatures range between 17°C and 24°C in the West, Far West, North Plateau and on the coast and range between 13°C and 18°C in the rest of the State.
