In order to raise awareness among the population about the relevance of organ and cornea donation, the State Department of Health (SES), in collaboration with the State Transplant Center, Eye Bank and Organ Procurement Organization (OPO), is promoting a special initiative. On Saturday, May 4, a “Walk for Life” will be held at Parque da Sementeira, starting at 4pm.

Under the motto “Donate organs, save lives and spread love”, the event will include lively activities to warm up before and after the tour through Parque da Sementeira, as well as a round table to discuss the importance of organ donation.

To become a donor, it is essential that the person expresses their wishes to family members while they are still alive, as authorization to harvest organs is granted by the family. It is crucial to emphasize that transplantation is a viable treatment only with organ donation, as without it the procedure cannot be carried out.

According to data from the State Transplant Center, managed by SES, from January to August 2023, 28 donations were registered, compared to 24 donations in the same period in 2022, representing an increase of 15%. Additionally, there was an increase in the number of donors in September 2023, with three registrations, compared to just one donor in the same period in 2022.

Benito Oliveira Fernandez, coordinator of the Transplant Center in Sergipe, attributes this increase in donations to the intensification of awareness campaigns. “Every time we manage to mobilize society through the media, we see a positive response in relation to authorization for organ donation”, explained Fernandez.
