The Fire Department and the Federal Highway Police (PRF) began searching this Friday morning (3) for 34 people who were trapped in a landslide on a stretch that connects Veranópolis to Bento Gonçalves, in Serra do Rio Grande do Sul. The accident occurred on Wednesday (3).
Until now, 39 people died due to the storms in Rio Grande do Sul. 68 remain missing. The latest Civil Defense bulletin points out that 31.5 thousand people are away from homebeing 7,949 people in shelters It is 23,598 homeless (at family or friends’ homes). 235 of the state’s 496 municipalities recorded some type of problemaffecting 351.6 thousand people.
A team of 11 people is working on the rescue, which began after a man who managed to leave the area notified authorities. He returned together with the Firefighters and the PRF on routes that allowed access. There are reports of injuries, but there is no information about deaths.
According to the Health Department, which arrived at the location, four people have open fractures and depend on air rescue, which would have arrived early this afternoon. The rest must be removed by land.

Resident of the region, Jean Marin reports that the defense agencies arrived at the location around 9am and that there was a cafeteria with people inside. He also says that the fire department helicopter already landed over the Ernesto Dornelles bridge.
The landslide even blocked BR-470 in Serra do Rio das Antas, in a section that connects both municipalities. According to Veranópolis City Hall, a section of the highway gave way, and the rescue and unblocking work on the section was interrupted due to the persistence of the rain.
