The domestic animal market is a booming reality. According to the Brazilian Association of the Pet Products Industry (Abinpet), there were approximately 167.6 million pets in the country in 2023, in an economic sector that generated R$46.8 billion last year. In Alagoas, this reality is no different. According to the Commercial Board of the State of Alagoas (Juceal), the opening of companies related to the domestic animal market grew 71.34% in the last five years.

The third largest market in revenue, Brazil is only behind the United States and China, according to Abinpet. And this well-proportioned evolution of the sector can also explain the numbers found for Alagoas.

From 2019 to 2023, companies selling live animals and pet food and supplies saw a growth of 54.04% in relation to business openings. This is the area with the highest number of establishments in the segment in the last five years, with 1,297 openings.

Another highlight in the period is the hygiene and beautification sector for domestic animals, which showed the greatest growth in relation to business constitutions, with an increase of 177.63%.

The other areas that make up the Commercial Board’s research are pet breeding, wholesale pet food and pet housing.

Nowadays, pets are considered part of families. This evolution of guardians with their pets makes these health and aesthetic care segments very prominent. This is what reinforces veterinarian and businessman Hugo Paes, responsible for the company BestPet Estética Avançada, located in Maceió and registered in November 2022.

“Owners currently spend more and invest more in the care of these animals. Nowadays, there is even a health plan for pets. Veterinary medicine is also growing a lot with expensive equipment to be able to care for and save the lives of these pets”, he reflects.

The businessman who also owns the Mina da Mata kennel highlights that the Covid-19 pandemic period and the post-pandemic period were essential for the growth of these sectors of the economy. “In terms of animal sales, for me, throughout Brazil it was the best time for people who raise animals. There was a waiting list of 15 to 20 people to buy a dog, for example. I think that, with people staying at home a lot more, they wanted company, so sales increased a lot. Today I see a normalization of this”, he points out.

As Juceal discloses, currently in the state there are 2,265 companies with active registration that have activities focused on pets as their main activity. The highest numbers are found in Maceió, with 1,017 businesses – 44.9% of the total -; Arapiraca, with 208; Rio Largo, with 87; and Marechal Deodoro, with 72.

For the president of Juceal, Ricardo Dória, the Commercial Board is essential for verifying the state’s economic potential, even in more niche activities such as the pet market.

“This agility work for registration is important, where we have one of the smallest in the country, but also this data analysis work. Alagoas has a very diverse economic potential and, as a business registration entity, we have produced studies that highlight good market practices. In addition to being the gateway for new companies, Juceal can be a bridge to economic development”, he highlights.

The Commercial Board is the authority responsible for the processes of opening, changing and closing companies in the state and administrator of the National Network for the Simplification of Registration and Legalization of Companies and Businesses (Redesim) in Alagoas.
