Capital of the Canyons of SC has homeless people and cancels classes because of rain; forecast indicates storms in the South region | Santa Catarina

Rain in Praia Grande, in the south of SC

Ten people are homeless in Praia Grande, in the south of Santa Catarina, after flooding caused by storms this Thursday (2). The city, known as the State Capital of Canyons and for the practice of ballooning, also canceled classes during the day because of the chance of more rain.

In alert for occurrences of landslides and floods, the city hall made buses available for possible evacuation in the 1º de Maio neighborhood, where the Mampituba River left the bed after exceeding 4.5 meters this morning. Teams are also working to unclog streams and drains.

SC-290, the state highway that connects Praia Grande to Rio Grande do Sul, It is also closed due to water on the track in some sections. In the municipality of Santa Catarina, residents who need shelter can go to the Municipal Gymnasium (see images of the damage).

The advance of the cold front should also bring winds with gusts between 50 and 65 km/h in the West, Vale do Itajaí and higher areas of the state.

Rain expected to continue on Friday

For Friday (3), the Civil Defense forecast is that the cold front will continue in Santa Catarina, maintaining the condition for heavy rain in much of the state. Thunderstorms with lightning, gusts of wind and hail are also expected.

Accumulated rainfall between Thursday and Friday could exceed 200 millimeters in the West, Serra and South, areas closest to the border with the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

This amount is equivalent to the historical average for the month of May, according to Epagri/Ciram, an organization that monitors meteorological conditions in Santa Catarina.

As a result, these areas are at high risk for damage.

In Vale do Itajaí and Greater Florianópolis, the accumulation should be around 100 millimeters, with the historical average for May in the region being up to 130 millimeters.

In these places, the risk of damage is moderate. In the North, it is low.
