The first rains of the rainy season in Roraima, known as ‘winter’, caused the level of the Branco river, the main river in Roraima, to reach 2.07 meters this Thursday morning (2), according to data from the National Water Agency (A-N-A). The brand is the biggest since September last year.

The latest updates from the National Water Agency indicated that the river reached 2 meters in the early hours of today, at 3:30 am, equal to that recorded on September 2, 2023 – the month in which the ‘winter’ rains begin to decrease and the state enters the dry period.

The Branco River is a source of drinking water that supplies the homes of residents of Boa Vista, it has registered a significant increase since the first rains of the winter and has now risen from the critical level. On April 20, the river reached a mark of -2 cm during the early hours of the morning – the last indication of the river being negative. Since then, the level has risen by more than 2 meters in just 12 days.

The positive mark is relief after the river recorded the second biggest drought in history, reaching -39 centimeters on March 28th. The drought affected the water supply in Boa Vista, as water is collected directly from the watercourse, and harmed the income of fishermen who, with the drought scenario, had no way to navigate and had to use rafts and canoes. in the sand.

Even with the water level rising this Monday, sand dunes still dominate the landscape in Rio Branco. At Orla Taumanã, one of the best-known tourist spots in Boa Vista, where it was possible to see the river flowing, there are still sections where it is possible to see large parts of sand along the way.

Rains

For the next few hours, the forecast is for more rain in Roraima, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), which issued a yellow warning of potential for storms in all municipalities in the state.

Rains of 20 to 30 millimeters and winds of up to 60 km/h are forecast until 10 am this Friday (3). There is a low risk of electricity cuts, falling tree branches, flooding and electrical discharges.
