CAIXA Cultural Rio de Janeiro receives, from May 4th to June 16th, 2024, the project Traveling with Telling Carpets, created by the group Os Tapetes Contadores de Histórias. With 25 years of a unique trajectory, the collective presents storytelling sessions for the whole family (Saturdays and Sundays, at 3pm), set against a unique interactive exhibition (open from Tuesday to Sunday). All programming is free. The project is sponsored by CAIXA and the Federal Government.

The storytelling sessions and the interactive exhibition present an overview of the solid work that the Os Tapetes Contadores de Histórias group has been building over more than two decades of activity, integrating different knowledge and artistic practices: storytelling, creation and sewing of scenes and objects, art education and visual arts – occupying galleries and cultural center spaces traditionally dedicated to exhibitions.

It was traveling the world and the four corners of Brazil, collecting tales wherever they went, researching traditional cultures, that the group today has 42 works assembled in its repertoire. The narratives sewn and embroidered by hand by the group itself, on colorful dolls, clothes, rugs, boxes, panels and books, come to life in the voices and interpretations of the members.

Among the texts interpreted in the Viajando com Tapetes Contadores project are tales from European, African, Latin American and Brazilian traditions. Brazilian authors, whose works are transposed into settings and characters, include Ana Maria Machado, Ricardo Azevedo, Graciliano Ramos and Carlos Drummond de Andrade. After the sessions, families are invited to manipulate and interact with the works.

From other nationalities, there is a poncho and a parchment, to narrate Greek myths; and a big birthday cake, for an American folk tale. Carpets from the French project Raconte-Tapis are also presented, as well as panels and cloth books by the Peruvian Manos que Cuentan. Next to each work, the corresponding book will be displayed.

The interactive exhibition is open for viewing from Tuesday to Sunday. The visit will be mediated by monitors, who will encourage families in the playful experience of reading and discovering new stories.

In addition to the exhibition and artistic presentations, there will also be a training workshop in the art of storytelling, aimed at young people and adults. This is an intensive 25-year creative process in planning and creating textile scenography based on oral narratives. Lasting a total of 12 hours, divided into 4 3-hour meetings, participants are invited to narrate, read, study and specialize in the resources available for good storytelling.

“20 years ago, we held the first interactive literary and textile exhibition in Brazil, at the CAIXA Cultural Complex, as it was called at the time, in Brasília and Rio de Janeiro. Since then, there have been 32 interactive exhibitions at CAIXA Cultural units across the country”, says Warley Goulart, member and founder of the group Os Tapetes Contadores de Histórias.

The project Viajando com Tapetes Contadores debuted at CAIXA Cultural Brasília in January 2024. It was then presented at CAIXA Cultural Fortaleza and by the end of this year it will be received by CAIXA Cultural São Paulo.

The group

25 years ago, Tapetes Contadores de Histórias founded a unique project in Brazil to transpose books into textile crafts and was the first national collective to promote interactive exhibitions within art galleries. If today publishers invest in cloth mascots to promote books, this is due to the legacy that emerged from the art of Counter Rugs. The group is an international reference as researchers on the intersections between text and textiles. It is also the group of narrators that most represented Brazil abroad – working in 16 countries, where they shared stories in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. In 2003, the group held the first exhibition of its collection at the so-called Conjunto Cultural da CAIXA, in Brasília and Rio de Janeiro. Since then, it has promoted 32 interactive exhibitions at CAIXA Cultural units across the country – a revolutionary initiative that transformed the view of art for children in the country. In 2016, his play “SHTIM SHLIM” won the awards for best show and best scenario at the Zilka Sallaberry award and Recommended Show Seal by CEPETIN. In 2018, they received the Baobá Prize, the most important national award for those who strengthen narrative art. In 2022, with sponsorship from the Instituto Cultural Vale, the group toured the Amazon for the first time, holding interactive exhibitions of its collection in indigenous communities and cultural centers in the cities of Belém, Igarapé-Miri and Marabá.
