The landscape of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, received an educational boost last Tuesday (30/04). Eight information signs are being installed at points where the native vegetation on the banks is being restored.

The initiative, which has the support of Rio de Janeiro City Hall, is from the biologist Mario Moscatelli, which has been working for 35 years helping to recover the lagoon’s mangroves. The concessionaire Águas do Rio also participates in the action.

The informative and educational signs identify some of the main plant and animal species native to the banks of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. The idea is to mobilize visitors to have more respect for the native fauna and flora that are protected by law.

According to Moscatelli, there is great confusion among some visitors to the lagoon, who cannot distinguish the difference between bush and plant species important for the conservation of local biodiversity.

”With this initiative, we hope to involve visitors more about the importance of the work that is being carried out on the banks of the Lagoon, in addition to clarifying that often what may seem like tall grass, is not. In reality, they are native plant species that function as important spatial, reproductive and food niches for the native animal species that inhabit the location.”explains the expert.

The biologist also highlights that, until a few decades ago, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas was considered an irrecoverable ecosystem. “Increasingly, we are witnessing the return of several plant and animal species”he adds.

Two signs were installed in front of Vasco’s nautical headquarters and two at Fonte da Saudade. Throughout the week, four other signs will also be installed in Corte do Cantagalo; Vinicius de Moraes; Skate Park; and mouth of the Rio dos Macacos. Visitors and visitors will be able to identify some of the animal and plant species found in Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas.

Anyone who passes by already notices the improvements with the naturalization project, at the Cantagalo Park. An initiative by the Subprefecture of the South Zone, recovers degraded and man-modified spaces, restoring conditions close to natural, in addition to the set of actions carried out by Águas do Rio in the region’s sewage system.

The concessionaire renovated the 13 lifts located around the water surface, which are responsible for pumping sewage to the Ipanema submarine outfall. The company also monitors irregular dumping in the canals and rivers that feed and connect the lagoon with the sea.

The installation of the signs will also function as an important ecotourism equipment, offering complete and relevant information on animal and plant species to visitors. By the end of the year, it is planned to install public binoculars, so that visitors can admire the landscape.
