The first weeks of May will be marked by frequent rain in Santa Catarina. According to the Meteorology team at the Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense (SDC), rains and storms will begin at the beginning of the month, with a greater concentration in areas close to the border with Rio Grande do Sul.

The regions that present a moderate risk for events associated with flooding and occasional flash floods are: Oeste, Planalto Sul, Litoral Sul and part of the Alto Vale do Itajaí. In other regions, the risk is low.

This time, the rains and storms are caused by the presence of an atmospheric blockage that should hinder the advance of the cold fronts that form between Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul towards Santa Catarina.

As a result, these cold fronts will have more stationary characteristics, that is, with slow movement, favoring the rain systems to act for a longer period. This condition is expected to persist throughout the first fortnight of May, with rainfall above the average for this season.

First week of May

Between Monday, 29th, and Wednesday, May 1st, the stationary cold front should present a slight displacement towards the state of Rio Grande do Sul, maintaining the condition for rains and storms in all regions of Santa Catarina, especially in the areas bordering the Rio Grande do Sul.

During this period, instability tends to lose strength in Santa Catarina, which allows periods of improvement with the appearance of the sun. However, the condition for the occurrence of storms remains present, especially in regions close to the border with Rio Grande do Sul.

Between Thursday, 2nd, and Friday, 3rd, the cold front will continue its movement to the North, positioning itself over Santa Catarina. During this period, the rain gains strength and the risk of storms increases in all regions of the state.

There is a condition for intense rain with thunderstorms, in addition to the risk of flooding and occasional flash floods, in addition to roofing and damage to the electrical network.

Recommendations for the population

– Stay informed about local weather conditions on official SDC networks;
– Do not drive in areas subject to flooding;
– Do not travel on submerged bridges or culverts;
– Do not cross flooded streets;
– Take extra care with children near rivers or streams;
– Reinforce safety on roofs and structures that may be affected by strong winds;
– Avoid outdoor activities during storms and seek a sheltered location;
– Pay attention to the inclination of poles and trees;
– Pay attention to earth movements or rocks near your home;
– Pay attention to cracks in walls and walls.

It is worth noting that the models present a great deal of uncertainty during this period. Therefore, the predicted rainfall volumes may change depending on the positioning of the stationary cold front. Therefore, the Secretariat of Civil Protection and Defense of Santa Catarina reiterates the need for the population to monitor daily updates to notes, notices and alerts.
